Garnet with a slight lighter red in the rim; medium bodied with good acidity and fine tannins. An initial nose of spice and earthyness, time in the glass revealing powerful, rich aromas of leather, cedar with a sweet background of rich figs and prunes. Excellent length on the mid-palate. Dense, mouth-filling flavours of fig, damson, sweet plum and chocolate all wrapped up in smooth cedarwood. Long finish. Excellent wine. (92 pts.) – Tasted 2/28/2009.

100% Chardonnay ABV 14.5% Pale straw colour, medium intensity, very clean, dense oily rivulets. This is the kind of wine that reminds me why Chardonnay can be so delicious and desirable. There is so much energy on the nose that you can smell it a foot away from the glass. We’re looking at an intense bouquet of tell-tale butter from barrel fermentation, vanilla, honeysuckle and cream. It’s a very strong wine for a white, at 14.5% ABV, and regrettably it’s a little unbalanced, with the alcohol component perhaps too clearly detectable. However, on the palate there’s a bright, vivid acidity which is perfectly balanced with the wine’s sweetness and grip. The finish expresses toasted almonds, apricots and a touch of lemon zest. A very pleasurable wine indeed, quite hedonistic. 91 points at least, would make 92 or 93 if it were less overwhelmed by alcohol. (91 pts.) – Tasted 2/12/2009.

Back on form. There were red and black fruits on the nose from the off. I knew I was in luck. There was a curious prickly sensation at the front of the tongue with each mouthful. While the overall feeling was smooth, this prickly sensation gave a sense of life to the wine. There was some decent body before it finished with a tart, stony finish. Along with a braised shoulder of lamb in a red wine sauce it went a treat. A welcome return to form! – Tasted 2/1/2009.
