Red fading to brown watery rim, some light sediment. Light berries, jammy fruit, light oak developing into earth and herbs later. Medium body yet silky smooth. Light fruit, sweet edges (not jammy) tempered with peppery spice. Tannins over acid. Palette over nose. Very good. Best merlot I have ever had (and am not usually a fan of merlot). 55% Garnacha, 45% Cab Sauv, Merlot & Syrah 14.5% ABV The 2006 Dofà might not be scaling the heights of 2005, 2004 and 2001, but it remains a singularly seductive proposition, with a fantastic perfumed nose of rose petals and cream, and a gorgeous, extraordinary purity and delicacy. This is my all-time favorite red, partly because it’s one of the first reds I found drinkable and unique back when I was learning to enjoy wine again. I am writing this note years after consumption, not because I remember anything specific about the wine, but because it made such an impression on me that I’m still talking about it years after I drank it. I’ve drank a lot of Carmeneres since then, and I’m still looking for one that can hold a candle Colvin’s. Sadly – in 2008 at Walla Walla Spring Release when we eagerly trekked to Colvin’s, the family-owned winery was closing up shop. I’m still mourning the loss. (89 pts.) – Tasted 12/1/2008.
