2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor (Private Reserve)

A nice, deep ruby color, clear with great intensity. A dense nose, with tar, stem, spice and black currant. Medium bodied, very well balanced. While a solid wine, I am not ure what the allure of this wine really is. (90 pts.) – Tasted 9/30/2008.

2005 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza

Very fruity nose. Like grape kool-aid when first opened, but after a few minutes just loads of dark fruit. Medium- to full-bodied with a fruity attack on the palate: raspberries, blackberries and black cherries. Nice tannins on the back end and a long, dark chocolate finish. A big but balanced wine. (89 pts.) – Tasted 9/22/2008.

2003 La Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri Rioja Reserva

As a match for lamb, it jarred on my palate. All I could get was that oakiness which is prevalent in Rioja. Yet, as Rioja goes, I really enjoyed it. There were some really exciting bright fruits before the oak kicked in, though it proved more obtrusive with food than without. (sept ’08) – Tasted 9/16/2008.

1990 Mommessin Clos de Tart

With Wilfred at Alinea. Ordered off the winelist. Just a benchmark Burgundy experience, truly sublime. Silken texture. Loads of mushroom and forest floor, hints of smoke. – Tasted 9/11/2008.

1982 Château La Lagune

Posted by WineTalking On September - 3 - 2008 ADD COMMENTS

This wine is nearly thirty years old, but it is so alive! It fills the mouth with loads of tannin, loads od acid and loads of fruity extract. What a powerful and agressive style! When I tasted the wine, I was tired of all these modern, easy-drinking wines. If you want a wine with character, try this one! Besides, it´s still not too expansive compared to other wines from that exceptional vintage. There´s tannin for several decades, but given to the high acidity, I think it´s best consumed over the next ten years. 95 points, drink now-2020 (95 pts.) – Tasted 9/3/2008.

2001 Château Laville

There was a strong flavour which reminded me of Armagnac but which I later reckoned was orange peel. Overall cloying. I could live without this style though funnily enough the wine still seemed very young and may open out more in the future. – Tasted 9/1/2008.
