With the Cheese we were served a Great Chateauneuf du Pape – Ch de Beaucastel Jaques Perrin Cuvee 1989 ! Enough said – the wine is flawless. Incredibly concentrated and ripe with a stunning tannic structure that can only be discerned if you look for it, so ripe is the fruit. The Mouvedre makes its presence felt – with the hung meat and complex undergrowth aromas and tastes that this grape so often displays. The wine will continue to age and improve (if that is possible!) for decades. It is an example of a wine that will prob be great at every stage of its develpoment! This 89 has none of the bretty character that teh regular cuvee has – not that this bothers me as that is also a great wine. So for me, 100 points – I really could not ask for any more, except for a few more bottles in my cellar! After this the host took anothetr walk into his cellar and came out with another modest cote du rhone from 1989 – Ch. Rayas! Once again a similar experience as the wine is obviously an infant with time ahead and still primary. Being mostly Grenache, the wine is not as dark or saturated as the beaucastel, and the flavour spectrum runs more to griotte cherries along with rhoney game aromas. In a way and because of the cherry smells one could call this burgundian, though in the mouth the wine is much more sturdy than Pinot. Another complete wien that was a privlege to taste. For me, 95 points. Wow, not a bad duo, and they both went with cheese too! (95 pts.) – Tasted 8/23/1999.
